What 20 Years in Community Taught Me About Running a Business
I didn't learn the most important things about running a business from a course, a coach, or a business school curriculum. I learned them from 20 years of being deeply embedded in community life here in Asheville, North Carolina.
From showing up to support local initiatives to building relationships one honest conversation at a time — community taught me things about trust, sustainability, and heart-centered leadership that no textbook could.
These are the lessons that shaped Be Love Biz Solutions. And I believe they're the same lessons that can transform how you run your business.
Lesson 1: Relationships Are the Infrastructure
In community work, you learn quickly that nothing gets done through transactions alone. Relationships are the invisible infrastructure that holds everything together. The same is true in business.
Your client relationships, your team relationships, your vendor relationships — these are not 'soft' extras. They are the load-bearing walls of your business. Invest in them the way you invest in any other critical system.
Lesson 2: Sustainability Requires Shared Responsibility
One of the fastest ways to burn out a community initiative is to let one person carry everything. The same is painfully true in business.
When you are the only one who knows how things work, when you are the only one who can answer client questions, when your business depends entirely on your personal bandwidth — you've built something that is one bad week away from crisis.
Women-led business consulting for sustainable growth is fundamentally about distributing responsibility wisely. That means documenting your processes, training your team, and trusting the systems you build.
Lesson 3: Consistency Builds Trust More Than Perfection
Community trust isn't built with grand gestures. It's built by showing up — consistently, reliably, with integrity — even when nobody is watching and even when it's inconvenient.
Your business is the same. Your clients trust you not because you're perfect, but because you're consistent. Your systems enable that consistency. When your onboarding process works the same way every time, when your communications arrive when expected, when your deliverables meet the standard you've set — that's trust being built, one touchpoint at a time.
Lesson 4: Collaboration Multiplies What Competition Diminishes
Asheville's entrepreneurial community has always had a collaborative spirit that I find beautiful. Businesses refer to each other. Creatives collaborate across disciplines. People genuinely cheer for each other's success.
This is not naive. It's strategic. When you build relationships with complementary businesses and fellow entrepreneurs, you multiply your reach, your resources, and your resilience. You are not alone in this.
Heart-centered business consulting services are built on this same collaborative philosophy. I'm not here to have all the answers — I'm here to think alongside you.
Lesson 5: The Long View Is Always Worth It
Community work taught me to think in years, not quarters. The relationships you invest in today pay dividends for decades. The infrastructure you build now becomes the foundation for everything that comes after.
Business growth strategies rooted in kindness and integrity operate the same way. Quick wins matter, but they are not the goal. The goal is a business that serves you, your clients, and your community beautifully — for the long haul.
Lesson 6: Your Story Is Your Most Powerful System
In community, the stories we tell about who we are and why we do what we do are what connect us. They're what inspire others to join, contribute, and care.
Your business story works the same way. Don't hide your journey behind polished marketing copy. Let people in. Share the reason you started. Share what drives you. Share the values that shape every decision you make.
For me, that story begins here in Asheville, in two decades of watching what love and community can build. And it's the same story I bring to every client relationship.
Community Is at the Heart of Everything We Build
